 The observance of National Indigenous Peoples Month 2024 with the theme “


Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalana” (Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge) plays a critical role in promoting and protecting the rights and culture of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in several key ways:


1. Raising Awareness: The month-long observance serves as an educational platform to raise awareness about the rich cultures, traditions, and histories of Indigenous Peoples. By highlighting their contributions to society, it challenges stereotypes and promotes a deeper understanding of IPs’ way of life.


2. Reinforcing Indigenous Peoples Rights: This observance aligns with the 27th anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA), which guarantees the recognition and protection of IPs’ rights to their ancestral lands, self-determination, and cultural heritage. The observance reminds the public and government of the importance of these legal frameworks, which are integral to safeguarding the rights of IPs.


3. Cultural Preservation: The theme emphasizes the need to preserve Indigenous knowledge and practices, including sustainable resource management, healing traditions, and spiritual beliefs. Promoting the recognition of *katutubong dunong* (Indigenous knowledge) is crucial in preventing cultural erosion and empowering Indigenous communities to protect their heritage.
